Episode XIII: “I Like My Girls BBW”: an Analysis

Bonjour mes petits choux! I am back again with another post. I know I’ve been on a roll this week, but this is something I wish to address as an individual of the plus size community. Now, I am all for support both within and outside of the community. However, what I’m about to discuss seems completely detrimental to our growth.

I despise the term BBW. Yes, I will admit that I have marked it as my physical description on dating sites. However, the times in which I’ve scrolled down those drop boxes to click on it, I’ve never felt more disappointed in myself and in the groups that perpetuate this acronym. Mind you, the problem for me does not lie in within the words “big beautiful woman” (sometimes known as big bodied woman). The problem for me are the spaces that utilize this term, how it’s being interpreted in mass media and how the general public processes these images.

BBW in Pornography

Now, if you were to search “bbw” in any porn search engine you would get many explicit and hypersexualized images of plus size women (sometimes with food as well which is another topic that I don’t feel like getting into right now) going solo or accompanied by  “smaller” counterparts. Do I have a problem with sexual expression? Absolutely not. We are all free to exercise our sexuality in the ways that we see fit. Do I have an issue with fetishizing individuals? Absolutely.  There is never a day where patriarchy doesn’t rear its ugly ass head, and I find “bbw” porn to be one of its brainchildren. The way porn codifies sexual interests in general has a very fetishized angle, and BBW porn within itself makes me realize this more and more.

Drake’s BBW

Mass media is another outlet where the term is starting to become more and more prevalent. Thanks to Drake saying “I like my girls BBW, the type that want want to suck you dry and then eat some lunch with you”, more and more people have affirmed the term being that the 6 God has stamped his OVO seal of approval on it. Where I find this to be ironic is that Drake’s BBW is still feeding into stereotypes that are still plaguing our community. Even within this lyric the BBW is considered someone who is readily available for sex and eating. It’s 2016, and people still make being bigger synonymous with sexual submission and food. I hate to break it to you, but being plus sized isn’t always a by product of diet choices. Also, Drake’s BBW and plus sized are two different things. Drake’s BBW is what is considered as “thick” and plus size is still something that isn’t viewed as positive.

BBW in Everyday Life

Thanks to Drake and all of the other influences, people are now utilizing this term, some for better, and some for worse. Y’all don’t know how many times I’ve been told by someone that “they like their women BBW” or “I only date BBWs”. I think that it’s unnecessary to tell someone because dating shouldn’t even be about the person aesthetically, it’s about getting to know someone for who they are. We live in a world where things are approved but in a limited fashion. It’s only ok to be a “bbw” when you have a “fat ass” or “big tits”, but what about the others with other features that aren’t these? I don’t think we question the infrastructure of our world enough, nor do we challenge these things. We do need support in our community but we shouldn’t allow others to reduce our value.

As always, feel free to comment, share and ask questions. This blog is geared for discussion, and I think having uncomfortable conversations can lead to something great. Until next time.
